The monk strap or simply monk shoe is a classical man’s shoe. The style of the monk resembles the Derby but, instead of lacing, the shoe is closed by a strap and buckle. This shoe is also known as the monk sandal. The name is derived from the fact that monks were thought to have worn these shoes. However, there is no evidence of this.
Similarly to the Derby and Oxford models, the monk is available in different versions, such as the cap-toe or brogue (with the typical perforations). If the shoe has two straps, it is known as a double monk. Apart from very formal occasions, the monk can be worn with all styles of clothing, ranging from jeans to a business suit.
